How to Achieve Entrepreneurial and Business Development Success

I have studied many business success stories, and it has always fascinated me what the secret sauce is for many of these successful individuals. Is it mindset, is it sheer determination, is it attitude, is it work ethic, or perhaps it’s their family upbringing? No matter how many case studies I read about or how many people I talk to, my conclusion is that it's a combination of all of these things. More so, the drive to execute in concert with these mindset factors is what creates a winning formula for success.

I invited my friend Colin Harms on my podcast, which you can listen to in its entirety through the embedded podcast below, to chat about his formula for success. Colin is someone I’ve known for a long time and is someone who exudes what I believe is the very definition of having a strong entrepreneurial and business development mindset. I’ve witnessed Colin continually execute on many business ventures, each with precision and success. Throughout the amazing conversation, I was able to distill his formula for success down to the following factors:

  1. Having a focus on building relationships. In order to do this, you need to have a passion for meeting new people and having conversations with them to find out how to better serve their needs.

  2. Having an entrepreneurial and business development mindset means thinking creatively.

  3. Being open to change. When you’re open to new ideas, you expose yourself to fresh perspectives and innovative approaches that can lead to breakthroughs in your personal and professional lives.

  4. Step out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to try something different. Oftentimes, people are afraid to try new things because they are comfortable with knowing how things are run or what the outcomes are going to be. Unfortunately, you miss a lot of opportunities if you don’t embrace the unknown.

  5. Focus on the value you bring and not the price point you pick. So many entrepreneurs and business development professionals are so focused on price that it often hampers their ability to make real progress.

  6. You must take action and not get trapped in the proverbial analysis paralysis.
